The Hiding Place Notes
In class, following brief reflections of the
first five chapters of The Hiding Place, a group assignment was introduced to
the class. Students were then divided into groups of four or five, of whom took
on the roles of Recorder, Delegator, Historical Researcher, and Chapter Expert.
Each groups task varied in that their assignment were contingent on the chapter
that they were assigned. With that focus, each group create a visual timeline
to help depict a more profound understanding of the events taking place in
Europe- in general, specifically in Holland, and the events taking place within
the Ten Boom family during this period.
Additionally, we were to summarize the key
elements of our given chapter, especially to understand God’s Providence over
Corrie’s life and her faith in that Provision. Then we stipulated examples of
specific incidents that support Corrie in the development of her faith and
circumstances that revealed the character of God. It was expected that we cited
at least one example to answer this question. To complete the task, there were
several resources for historical research at our disposal.
We could use digital devices to help us
locate information; one of which were links on the course blog, as a place to
start. We were also able to utilize resources afforded to us through the
library, especially information regarding World War I as it surrounded Holland
or the trajectory of Nazi occupation and World War II.
When completing the task, we had three
timelines lined up to show how the Ten Boom family’s life overlapped and
intersected with the world at large. We labeled dates and events, accordingly,
but when we got to Corrie’s life timeline, we estimated as best as we
could.
Summarizing the given chapter was a
responsibility of the Chapter Expert, who wrote up the basic arc of the chapter
to help us see what this chapter reveals about the roles of faith in Corrie’s
life.
Presenting was the last portion of this
assignment as each group decided how we wanted to share our information with
the class. In total, we were given 30-40 minutes to prepare the assignment and
about 6-8 minutes to present our findings.
For example, my group was responsible for chapter
one:
*1937
(Dutch women had to wear
knee length skirts)
(Corrie is concerned with her image) (ten boom fam.
Realized the darkness in the world)
*1927

thesis about evil taking place)
*1891 (Corrie’s grandfather dies)

*1837
(Corrie’s grandfather places sign

*1914 (WWI begins)
*1919 (Tante dies)
*1921 (Corrie’s
